Changing the pads are an easy task,i prefer LUCUS pads,or ap lockheed,they have a very good compound not too hard and not too soft,MINTEX are good but i find that they are a very very hard pad and tend to wear discs out very quickly,(brass,copper) amoungst a few ingredients,squeel,squeel,squeel.STAY away from the cheap noddy makes,yuk yuk.

Also if you do have pads fitted at a garage(main dealer) and your cars year is 2000 and after they are supposed to fit pads with the regulation 90 stamp mark.(a circle with E90 in it),it is a lawful requirement now so that the pads they fit are within 15% of the OE pads.

Beware front pads for calipers for later galaxys have same metal back plate but a increased width of pad area. No british non OEM makes the exact front pads. But I made a tracing of exact size of backplate and pad and took to "German and Swidish ltd". I got exact front and rear pads from these gys, But had to lengthen the front sensor cable.(There is only one sensor used front one used rear.)

There part no 64432 for front SHARAN 5/01> (+sens 16 INCH WHE)

I dont know if there's any differences between the various models brake components but the disc pads for my 96 Galaxy were 16 GBP (sorry dont have pound sign on keyboard) from Halfords for the set. The rear ones were pretty much the same price but were out of stock at the time. (Cant remember what make but no problems fitting or using them ) It was a pleasant surprise after hearing huge quotes like those in earlier posts!

I believe an EEC directive is now in force, which obliges aftermarket manufacturers to perform within 30% (IIRC) of the original manufacturers specification (braking performance I presume)

 

Look out for the E90 compliance mark - I know Delphi (Lockheed) have it.

E-90 is a European Legislation, that in simple terms, requires a manufacturer to prove, via independently witnessed test procedures, that the performance of their friction products is within a tolerance of the original equipment brake pads or shoes fitted to the vehicle.
